Have I told you lately....

...how much I LOVE Alec Baldwin and HATE circuses?

Alec Baldwin is seriously THE MAN. He's attractive (and might I say, aging very well), a great actor (who doesn't love 30 Rock?), the new narrator of the US version of Frozen Planet (yay! no more Oprah!), an animal rights activist, and vegan, to boot. Recently, Peta released a video with Mr. Baldwin highlighting the horrors of circuses - mainly those related to elephants. See for yourself...

The sad part is - I can post this as much as I want, but the people who need to see it, will not watch it. And that bums me out. Recently, the circus (otherwise known as animal-cruelty-with-audience-participation) came to my town of Portland, Maine and I had the urge to get out there and protest. I didn't in the end, because honestly, I know that it won't change people's minds. It won't get them to suddenly see the light or understand why it's such a deplorable source of entertainment (it pains me to call it entertainment). I don't know how we can get families with screaming two-year-olds and expendable income to stop putting up blinders and educate themselves. I think our energy is better spent trying to change laws and trying to get this country to outlaw circuses that use animals all together.

Oh no Bob's Red Mill's, NO!

"Bob’s Red Mill’s standing as a conscious and compassionate company is about to take a serious hit. The grain seller is donating $25 million to the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU), an institution responsible for extensive animal testing." - From The Informed Vegan

Total sad face. That money could have supported so many other causes. The testing is for "nutrition education" and "research on obesity and other diseases." I'm sorry, but I think animal testing in reference to obesity is the absolute worst. Obesity is something we can control - yes, some people have emotional disorders that lead them down that path - but ultimately, it's a hole you dig yourself and it's a hole you should have to climb out of without using products and research tested on animals. Gah!

So I'm officially not buying any Bob's Red Mill's products anymore, that includes my baking business. I'm really disappointed that they didn't think this one through.

Shark Fin Soup

While lounging on the couch with a back injury and mindlessly flipping through television channels, I did not expect to stumble upon a Gordon Ramsay show detailing the horrors of the Asian delicacy, Shark Fin Soup. Now Ramsay is no vegetarian - not by ANY means, but after watching this show, I did have a new found respect for the man.

His investigation in Taiwan led him to roof tops with thousands of fins drying out in the sun, boats where live sharks had their fins cut off, were kicked and prodded before being tossed back in the ocean, and docks where bags of fins were unloaded from boats and the police stood by without enforcing any of the "standards" that were supposedly the law. And all this for a stupid bowl of soup.

I was sobbing. Seriously. If you happen to catch this show on BBC, I doubt you will watch with dry eyes. I had never even heard of shark fin soup, much less knew that the shark fishing industry was this offensive and detrimental. Apparently Thai fishers were spreading their fishing all the way to Costa Rica where a biologist reported that in 9 years the shark population had decreased by 60%. 60%. Are you kidding me? THIS is what the Discovery Channel should be reporting during shark week. Let's juxtapose the beautifully captured footage of sharks in their natural habitats doing their thing with a shark flopping on the deck of a fishing boat and some ignorant fisherman kicking it before chopping off its fins. Maybe then people will start to get a clue.
Here's some footage of the show from Youtube:
